What Is the GRE?

GRE stands for Graduate Record Examinations.

The GRE General Test is designed to measure skills that have developed over time and are relevant to advanced study.

ETS describes the test as measuring:

  • verbal reasoning;
  • quantitative reasoning;
  • critical thinking;
  • analytical writing.

It is not tied to one undergraduate major.

That is why the same GRE can be used across applications to:

  • master's programs;
  • doctoral programs;
  • MBA and other business programs;
  • law programs;
  • other professional graduate degrees.

Whether the GRE is:

  • required;
  • optional;
  • accepted but not required;
  • not considered

depends on the individual program.

Always check the admissions page for the exact degree you are applying to.

GRE General Test vs GRE Subject Tests

There are two different GRE product families.

GRE General Test

This is the exam most applicants mean when they say "the GRE."

It measures broad reasoning and writing skills.

GRE Subject Tests

Subject Tests assess knowledge in a specific academic discipline.

ETS currently offers:

  • Mathematics;
  • Physics;
  • Psychology.

These are separate exams.

A department may:

  • require a Subject Test;
  • recommend it;
  • consider it optional;
  • not use it.

The Subject Test does not replace the General Test if a program asks for both.

Current GRE General Test Format

The current standard GRE has five timed sections.

MeasureQuestions / TaskTime
Analytical Writing1 Analyze an Issue task30 min
Verbal Reasoning Section 112 questions18 min
Verbal Reasoning Section 215 questions23 min
Quantitative Reasoning Section 112 questions21 min
Quantitative Reasoning Section 215 questions26 min
Total54 Verbal/Quant questions + 1 essay~1h58m

The Analytical Writing section always comes first.

The Verbal and Quant sections can appear in either order after that.

The current shorter GRE has no scheduled break.

At a test center, an unscheduled break does not stop the clock.

At home, unscheduled breaks are not permitted under the standard rules.

How GRE Section-Level Adaptive Testing Works

GRE Verbal and Quant are section-level adaptive.

This is different from question-by-question adaptive testing.

For each measure:

  1. the first section is around average difficulty;
  2. ETS evaluates your overall performance on that section;
  3. the second section is selected at an appropriate difficulty level;
  4. your final score reflects correct answers across both sections and the difficulty path.

Within a section, all questions contribute equally to the final score.

Why this matters

A strong first Quant section can lead to a more difficult second Quant section.

A strong first Verbal section can lead to a more difficult second Verbal section.

But within the active section, you are free to:

  • skip questions;
  • mark them;
  • return later;
  • change answers;
  • choose the order in which you work.

This is one of the GRE's most distinctive test-design features.

GRE Analytical Writing

The current GRE contains one writing task:

Analyze an Issue

You have 30 minutes.

The old Analyze an Argument task was removed in September 2023.

Analytical Writing measures your ability to:

  • articulate complex ideas;
  • build a position;
  • support claims with relevant reasons and examples;
  • sustain a focused discussion;
  • communicate clearly in standard written English.

ETS publishes the entire official Issue Topic Pool.

That makes Analytical Writing preparation relatively transparent: you can practice with the same pool from which your real prompt will be drawn.

GRE Verbal Reasoning

GRE Verbal tests your ability to understand and reason from written material.

The three official question types are:

  1. Reading Comprehension
  2. Text Completion
  3. Sentence Equivalence

Reading Comprehension

Tests skills such as:

  • main idea;
  • detail;
  • inference;
  • author's purpose;
  • passage structure;
  • assumptions;
  • evaluating evidence.

Text Completion

Tests whether you can use:

  • vocabulary;
  • grammar;
  • logic;
  • context

to reconstruct missing words or phrases.

Sentence Equivalence

You choose two answers that both create coherent sentences with equivalent meaning.

Vocabulary matters, but Verbal is not simply a vocabulary exam.

For the complete content outline, see our GRE syllabus guide.

GRE Quantitative Reasoning

GRE Quant measures your ability to:

  • understand quantitative information;
  • interpret data;
  • solve mathematical problems;
  • use mathematical models.

ETS defines four main content areas:

  1. Arithmetic
  2. Algebra
  3. Geometry
  4. Data Analysis

The General Test does not test calculus or trigonometry.

Main Quant question formats

You will see:

  • Quantitative Comparison;
  • multiple choice — one answer;
  • multiple choice — one or more answers;
  • Numeric Entry;
  • Data Interpretation sets.

Calculator

An on-screen calculator is available.

But ETS recommends using it selectively.

Many questions are faster through:

  • estimation;
  • reasoning;
  • simple mental calculation.

GRE Scoring

The GRE General Test reports three separate scores.

MeasureScore Range
Verbal Reasoning130–170
Quantitative Reasoning130–170
Analytical Writing0–6

Verbal and Quant are reported in one-point increments.

Analytical Writing is reported in half-point increments.

Is There a GRE Total Score?

No official combined GRE Total Score is reported by ETS.

Candidates often add Verbal + Quant and use informal totals such as:

  • 310;
  • 320;
  • 325;

That shorthand can be convenient, but it can hide the section profile.

For example:

  • V165 + Q160 = 325
  • V155 + Q170 = 325

Those results can mean very different things for different graduate programs.

For a full interpretation framework, see our GRE Scores and Percentiles guide.

GRE Percentiles

Percentiles show how your score compares with other GRE test takers.

The key insight is that the same scaled number can represent very different relative performance across sections.

For example, in ETS's current published interpretive data:

  • Verbal 160 ≈ 84th percentile
  • Quant 160 ≈ 50th percentile

So GRE scores from different measures should not be directly compared without percentile context.

ETS also publishes score-distribution data by:

  • intended graduate field;
  • MBA intent;
  • other reference groups.

That can be more useful than the overall percentile when evaluating program fit.

When Do GRE Scores Come Out?

Official GRE General Test scores are normally available in your ETS account 8–10 days after the test date.

ETS also sends official Institution Score Reports to the recipients you selected.

Your score report includes:

  • Verbal score and percentile;
  • Quant score and percentile;
  • Analytical Writing score and percentile;
  • test dates;
  • authorized score recipients;
  • reportable score history.

How Long Are GRE Scores Valid?

GRE scores are reportable for five years after the test date.

This gives you flexibility to:

  • test before the application cycle;
  • apply to several cycles;
  • reuse a valid score for different programs.

Your program may still have its own policy about how recent it wants the score to be.

GRE ScoreSelect

ETS's ScoreSelect option lets you decide which reportable GRE test administrations to send.

Programs receive the scores you choose under the available ScoreSelect options.

ETS does not add a notation showing that you took other GRE tests that you did not select.

However, some programs may independently require applicants to report all test attempts.

Always follow the program's application instructions.

Four Free Score Recipients

Your GRE General Test fee includes up to four score recipients.

If you choose recipients on test day, there is no additional report fee for those four.

Additional Score Reports ordered later currently cost ₹4,150 / US$40 per recipient in India.

For the full cost structure, see our GRE exam fees guide.

GRE Diagnostic Service

ETS offers a free GRE Diagnostic Service for Verbal and Quant.

It can show performance by:

  • question type;
  • skill area;
  • difficulty;
  • time spent.

This makes it useful for:

  • understanding an actual GRE result;
  • diagnosing a weak section;
  • planning a retake.

GRE Test Dates

The GRE General Test does not have one fixed annual exam calendar.

It is available year-round in most regions.

Test center

ETS offers GRE testing at more than 1,000 authorized test centers across 160+ countries.

Exact dates depend on live local availability.

At home

GRE at-home testing is offered:

  • 24 hours a day;
  • 7 days a week;

subject to appointment availability and eligibility.

The at-home test is identical in:

  • content;
  • format;
  • on-screen experience;
  • scoring.

Only the delivery environment differs.

For scheduling strategy, see our GRE exam dates guide.

GRE at Home

At-home testing can be convenient, but your:

  • computer;
  • internet connection;
  • room;
  • identity verification

must meet ETS requirements.

For appointments booked under the current process, ETS requires advance identity verification through its verification system.

At-home testing is remotely proctored.

Choose it only if you have a reliable setup.

GRE Fees in 2026

Effective August 1, 2026, ETS lists the GRE General Test fee as:

US$249 in most regions

For India:

₹25,522 / US$249

China has a separate published price.

Additional current India fees include:

  • reschedule: ₹5,650 / US$55;
  • change test center: ₹5,650 / US$55;
  • Additional Score Report: ₹4,150 / US$40;
  • AWA score review: ₹5,900 / US$60;
  • score reinstatement: ₹5,000 / US$50.

See our GRE exam fees guide before registering.

GRE Registration

GRE registration is handled through your ETS account.

A normal registration process is:

  1. create or sign in to your ETS account;
  2. verify that your name matches your ID;
  3. choose GRE General Test;
  4. choose test center or at home;
  5. select an available date;
  6. pay the fee;
  7. review the confirmation and test-day rules.

GRE ID Requirements in India

For an Indian citizen testing in India, ETS currently lists a valid passport with name, photograph and signature as the acceptable primary ID.

ETS specifically lists Aadhaar as unacceptable.

The name used in your ETS registration must match the ID.

This is a high-impact test-day rule: an ID mismatch can prevent you from testing.

Always verify the current ETS India ID requirements before registration.

How Often Can You Take the GRE?

You can take the GRE General Test:

  • once every 21 days;
  • up to five times within any continuous rolling 12-month period.

This applies even if you canceled scores from a prior administration.

A retake requires another full registration fee.

When Should You Take the GRE?

Work backward from your application deadlines.

Remember:

  • official scores take around 8–10 days;
  • institutions may need processing time;
  • a retake requires a 21-day gap.

A practical first-attempt target is often:

  • 3–4 weeks before the deadline if you do not expect to retake;
  • 6–8 weeks before the deadline if you want room for one retake.

Those are planning buffers, not ETS deadlines.

For detailed timing examples, see our GRE exam dates guide.

How to Prepare for the GRE

A strong preparation process is:

diagnostic → target setting → skill repair → timed practice → official mock → review → adjustment

Start with official practice

Use ETS POWERPREP for:

  • test interface;
  • realistic timing;
  • navigation;
  • score baseline.

Diagnose the section

For Quant, identify whether the issue is:

  • arithmetic;
  • algebra;
  • geometry;
  • data analysis;
  • pacing.

For Verbal:

  • Reading Comprehension;
  • Text Completion;
  • Sentence Equivalence;
  • vocabulary;
  • inference;
  • timing.

For Analytical Writing:

  • thesis;
  • reasoning;
  • examples;
  • organization;
  • writing speed.

Build accuracy before speed

Learn the method first.

Then add:

  • timed sets;
  • full sections;
  • full tests.

For the full strategy, see our GRE preparation guide.

Official GRE Preparation Resources

ETS currently offers:

  • POWERPREP practice tests;
  • Official Guide to the GRE General Test;
  • official Verbal practice questions;
  • official Quant practice questions;
  • ETS Math Review;
  • Mathematical Conventions guide;
  • Analytical Writing Issue Topic Pool;
  • paid POWERPREP PLUS tests.

Start with official resources before deciding what additional materials you need.

What Is a Good GRE Score?

There is no one score that is good for every field.

A useful GRE target depends on:

  • your program;
  • the relative importance of Verbal vs Quant;
  • published program averages or ranges;
  • your academic background;
  • the rest of your application.

A 160 can mean:

  • very strong Verbal performance;
  • average Quant performance.

So "160 is good" is incomplete advice.

Interpret every score in:

section + percentile + field + program context

GRE vs GMAT

GRE and GMAT are both used by many business schools, but they have different structures.

GRE

  • section-level adaptive;
  • calculator in Quant;
  • separate V/Q/AWA scores;
  • Reading Comprehension, Text Completion, Sentence Equivalence;
  • geometry in Quant.

GMAT

  • question-adaptive within sections;
  • no calculator in Quant;
  • Total Score plus three section scores;
  • Data Insights;
  • Critical Reasoning;
  • no Analytical Writing section.

For MBA applicants, the better exam is normally the one:

  • accepted by the target programs;
  • better suited to your strengths;
  • producing the stronger official practice performance.

GRE Subject Tests

GRE Subject Tests are separate achievement tests in:

  • Mathematics;
  • Physics;
  • Psychology.

They are designed for candidates with an undergraduate major or extensive background in the field.

Current 2026–27 Subject Test windows

ETS lists:

  • September 14–27, 2026;
  • October 19–November 1, 2026;
  • April 19–May 2, 2027.

Current Subject Test fee:

US$199 worldwide

Subject Tests can be retaken once every 14 days, subject to the available test windows.

At-home Subject Test testing is not currently available in India.

Do not reduce GRE strategy to one informal combined score.

3. When should you take it?

Work backward from deadlines and preserve retake time if needed.

4. How should you prepare?

Use an official diagnostic, repair actual weaknesses and validate progress with timed practice.

5. What does your final score mean?

Read:

score → percentile → section profile → field → target program

The GRE is not just one exam score.

It is a three-part academic profile that should be interpreted in the context of the program you want to enter.
