Question 1

What does the AdmitExpert School Selection Tool do?

Accepted Answer

It builds a personalised shortlist of MBA programs for you. You answer a short set of questions about your academics, test scores, work experience, budget and career goals, and the tool matches your profile against our database of business schools to return a categorised list of best-fit programs — typically in under five minutes.

Question 2

Is the tool free?

Accepted Answer

Yes. There is no charge to run the assessment or view your shortlist. If you want a deeper, consultant-led review of your list, you can book a 1:1 consultation separately.

Question 3

How long does it take?

Accepted Answer

About three to five minutes. Have your GMAT/GRE score (or a target score), your undergraduate GPA or percentage, and a rough sense of your post-MBA goal ready before you start.

Question 4

Can I use the tool if I haven't taken the GMAT or GRE yet?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Enter your target or practice-test score. The shortlist will be indicative, and you can re-run the tool once you have an official score.

Question 5

How does the tool decide which schools to recommend?

Accepted Answer

Each school in our database carries data on its class profile (average and range of GMAT/GRE scores, GPA, years of work experience), tuition and living costs, post-MBA salary and placement outcomes, industry and location strengths, and international-student friendliness. Your inputs are scored against these data points, and schools are ranked by overall fit rather than by a single ranking number.

Question 6

What do the categories in my results mean?

Accepted Answer

Your list is split into tiers based on how competitive your profile is for each school — for example, Ambitious (Dream), Competitive (Target) and Safe (Likely). A balanced application strategy usually includes schools from every tier rather than only from the top.

Question 7

Is this just a rankings filter?

Accepted Answer

No. Rankings are one input, but the tool weighs your realistic admission chances, affordability, return on investment and alignment with your career goal. A school ranked #5 globally is not a 'good fit' if it is out of budget, doesn't recruit for your target industry, or rarely admits candidates with your profile.

Question 8

How current is the school data?

Accepted Answer

The database is refreshed each admissions cycle using the latest published class profiles, employment reports and fee schedules. Where a school has not yet published its most recent data, we use the prior year's figures.

Question 9

How many schools will I get?

Accepted Answer

Typically 8–15 programs across the tiers. You can re-run the assessment with different inputs (for example, a higher budget or a different geography) to see how your list changes.

Question 10

What factors does the tool take into account?

Accepted Answer

GMAT / GRE score — compared against each school's average and middle-80% range Undergraduate GPA / percentage — including the strength of your institution where relevant Work experience — total years, quality and progression, and whether it falls within a school's typical range Diversity – education/industry/function/gender/background etc. Extra-curricular activities – anything not related to your academics or work-ex, like volunteering with NGOs, sports, music, arts, adventure etc. Budget — total program cost (tuition plus living expenses) against what you can fund ROI — post-MBA salary uplift relative to cost and time out of the workforce Career goals — target industry, function and post-MBA geography, matched with each school's recruiting strengths Program preferences — location, program length (one-year vs two-year), class size and international mix Demographic and applicant-pool context — for example, the higher competition Indian engineering and IT applicants face at certain schools

Question 11

How much does my GMAT/GRE score matter?

Accepted Answer

It matters, but it is one variable among several. A score at or above a school's average makes you competitive on that dimension; a score below the average can be offset by strong work experience, career clarity or an unusual background. The tool reflects this by scoring fit holistically rather than applying a hard cut-off.

Question 12

I have a low GPA. Will I still get useful results?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many strong MBA candidates have below-average GPAs. The tool factors in GPA but also gives weight to test scores and professional achievements. If your GPA is a clear weakness, your list will lean toward schools where your other strengths carry more weight.

Question 13

How is work experience evaluated?

Accepted Answer

Both quantity and quality. Most full-time MBA programs admit candidates with roughly three to eight years of experience; executive and one-year programs have different ranges. The tool matches your years of experience against each program's typical intake and also considers the seniority and progression you report.

Question 14

How does budget affect my shortlist?

Accepted Answer

Schools whose total cost exceeds your stated budget are either excluded or flagged, depending on how close the gap is. Enter your budget honestly, including living costs, so the list reflects programs you can realistically fund through savings, loans and scholarships.

Question 15

How is ROI calculated?

Accepted Answer

ROI compares the total cost of the program (tuition, living expenses and lost salary during the program) with the typical post-MBA salary and the expected time to recover the investment. Schools with strong placement in your target industry and geography score higher on ROI for your profile.

Question 16

Why do career goals matter for school selection?

Accepted Answer

Because business schools have very different recruiting footprints. A school that places a large share of its class into consulting or investment banking is not necessarily strong in tech product management, healthcare or social impact. The tool prioritises schools whose employment outcomes match the industry, function and region you want to work in.

Question 17

How is this better than picking schools from a rankings list?

Accepted Answer

Rankings measure a school's overall reputation, not your fit with it. Applying only to the top-ranked schools often leads to a full set of rejections; applying to schools that don't serve your goals leads to a poor return on a very large investment. The tool starts from your profile and your goals and works outward, which is how experienced admissions consultants build school lists.

Question 18

Will the tool tell me my chances of admission at each school?

Accepted Answer

It gives you a tier (Ambitious, Competitive or Safe) that reflects how your profile compares with each school's typical admits. It does not produce a percentage probability — admission depends heavily on essays, recommendations and interviews, which no tool can assess.

Question 19

Can the tool consider schools outside the US?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The database covers programs in the US, Europe, the UK, Canada, Asia (including Singapore, Hong Kong and India) and Australia. Indicate your preferred geographies and the tool will weight them accordingly.

Question 20

What should I do with my shortlist once I have it?

Accepted Answer

Use it as a starting point, not a final answer. Research each school's curriculum, clubs and recruiting reports; speak to current students or alumni; and check application deadlines. If you'd like an expert opinion on the list, or help deciding which round to apply in, book a consultation with an Admit Expert consultant.

Question 21

Can I change my answers and re-run the assessment?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Re-running with a different budget, geography or career goal is a useful way to see how sensitive your list is to each factor.

Question 22

How many schools should I apply to?

Accepted Answer

Most applicants apply to five to eight programs: two or three ambitious, two or three competitive and one or two safe. Applying to fewer risks a full set of rejections; applying to many more dilutes the quality of each application.

Question 23

What is a 'safe' school in MBA admissions?

Accepted Answer

A school where your test score, GPA and experience are comfortably above the average admit, and which still aligns with your goals. 'Safe' never means guaranteed — a weak essay or interview can lead to a rejection anywhere.

Question 24

Should I apply to a school only because it's highly ranked?

Accepted Answer

No. Ask whether the school recruits for your target industry and geography, whether you can afford it, and whether its culture and class profile suit you. A lower-ranked school with a strong placement record in your field will often deliver a better outcome.

Question 25

One-year or two-year MBA — which should I choose?

Accepted Answer

One-year programs (common in Europe and Asia, including ISB and IIM executive programs) suit candidates with clear goals and more experience who want to minimise cost and time away from work. Two-year programs suit career switchers who benefit from a summer internship and more time for recruiting.

Question 26

How important is location?

Accepted Answer

Very important. Most MBA graduates work in the region where they studied, because that is where the school's recruiting relationships and alumni network are strongest. Choose schools in the geography where you want to build your post-MBA career, and check visa and work-permit rules for international students.

Question 27

What if my profile is common in the applicant pool — for example, an Indian engineer in IT?

Accepted Answer

Competition is tougher within over-represented pools, so the effective bar at many schools is higher than the published average. Build a list with a wider spread of tiers, emphasise what makes your story distinctive, and consider schools that actively recruit for diversity of industry and background.

Question 28

When should I start shortlisting schools?

Accepted Answer

Ideally 9–12 months before your first deadline. Early shortlisting gives you time to take (or retake) the GMAT/GRE, visit or connect with schools, line up recommenders and build strong, school-specific essays.

Question 29

Does the tool replace an admissions consultant?

Accepted Answer

No. It gives you a data-driven starting point. A consultant adds judgement the data can't — how to position a gap in your profile, which schools' cultures suit you, and how to sequence your applications across rounds.
